These enamoring rustic feathers look wonderful as a set or a single, and will inspire many conversations. Like many of Carol’s designs, this sculpture is made to add height and variety to your garden.
The stainless steel in this whimsical piece will brighten the darkest corners of your garden. At almost 5′ it also provides height and a focal point to lower growing areas (above the Hostas!)
Feathers hold an enchanted place in our mind since we only come across one by pure chance. They capture our attention and bring us to the present moment, and are a memorable part of our nature outings.
To our great delight, our favourite garden plants can be purchased at nurseries – or even Walmart. The feather on the other hand is not a commodity we see in the check-out line, with little SKUs stickied to each calamus shaft.
The individual feather has not made it’s way into modern life yet – as such, the feather is a last vestige of a wilder time and place.
Each mixed media feather varies slightly from the next. They are crafted from a mixture of metal pieces, some cut from mild steel (which rusts), and others from stainless steel.
A mild steel piece of feather may be solid, or feature cut lines, cut circles, or a mixture of both.
The stainless steel pieces may be hand burnished to invoke the feeling that the feather has many barbs (strands).
On occasion perforated (hole) metal may also be cut into feather strips.
The calamus is hand bent to run through the center of the feather, ending in the ground as a garden stake.
All the feathers vary in design. If you’d like to choose from available stock, in the Note section at check out you may write in a request for photos.

Mild Steel
This material will rust unless it is properly cleaned and then spray painted or powdercoated.
The aesthetic of the rust will vary based on humidity and temperature.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is essentially seen as ‘Rustless’ in the art industry.
Though, over a long enough time horizon, it will slowly show signs of rust.
Powdercoating is how metal car parts are painted. It is durable, blocks rust, and comes in beautiful finishes.
We use professional powdercoaters. The cost of powdercoating a design depends on three things:
1. The size
2. The colour chosen
3. How many pieces there are
Options:
-Any classic colour
-Any faux metallic finish
To request custom powdercoating please email info@soulmetal.ca
The cost starts at +$75
Exchanges are considered on a case by case basis. Here are some general guidelines:
-Yes, if the product is in new condition with no scratches or damage
-Yes, if you just purchased and want to exchange non-rusted for rusted, or vice versa
-No, custom orders may not be exchanged.
-Additional shipping costs are the buyers responsibility.
Please email info@soulmetal.ca for more details.
All shipping orders will include insurance so that in the event a design arrives damaged,
it may be replaced at no extra cost to the customer.
To file a claim, we need you to send us photos of:
how the packaging arrived, damage on the design, and the date it arrived.
Email info@soulmetal.ca
Every design can safely withstand average wind, rain, and snow.
If a serious storm is coming, simply assess the environment your art is in:
-Is the sculpture sitting on a pedastal?
-Is the sculpture underneath or in the path of a tree?
-Would placing a tarp over the art protect it from falling debris or heavy snow?
There is one design which we always ask people to cover or remove during snowy weather:
On Floras, snow can build up on each leaf, adding strain to the weld point.
We have redesigned Floras to reduce the strain, but still prefer homeowners treat them with caution.
If a weld is ever damaged, you are welcome to drop your piece at our studio for fixing.
Just email info@soulmetal.ca and let us know what’s happened.
Stake
Many small garden pieces are mounted on a long stake.
If the design sits on a stake (ex. Zen Circles) then 2 sturdy prongs measuring 10-12″ are welded to the bottom.
Base Plate
We rarely use base plates, unless custom ordered.
You can cover them with rocks, or request precut holes in the base plate, so you can bolt your art down.
Wall Mount
Please inquire about a specific design for which you are unsure.
Some wall decor designs have screw holes,
while others have a hanging system with screw-slots welded to the back.
Privacy Screen
Please see the official privacy screen page for examples of different mounting techniques.
No bolts or screws are currently included with any design.
We’ve heard this question from new clients before.
The simple answer is no.
We have 10 year old designs around our shop, with not a single rust-eaten hole.
Also, we feel strongly about using thicker metal
in order to ensure the quality and longevity of our designs.
Caring for your metal designs is simple.
To deter damage to the surface, use a soft cloth to wipe dirt and debris off the surfaces.
You may desire to re-powdercoat after 5-10 years.
In this case, reach out to us, or talk with your local powdercoater.
